South Salem - Westchester County holds quite an array of beautiful neighborhoods, and hamlets. South Salem is a hamlet close to the New York/Connecticut border.   It is a hamlet in the quaint town of Lewisboro and is part of New York's Metropolitan area.
In the early 1700's, land deeds were being bought and sold in rapid succession.  At one point the eastern section of town, the hamelts of Vista, Lewisboro, Hamlet and South Salem were all thrown into the pot and called The Oblong.  Border wars between CT and NY and MA ensued.

New York state borders were establised in 1731 and continued with the controversy over borders for years.  However, in 1840 businessman John Lewis donated $10,000 to the support of public education.  His only request was to have the town be named after him.  And Lewisboro, NY was born! The town was hardly touched by the Revolutionary War, although the town would house important government officials and a couple of spies!

Since South Salem is considered a hamlet within the Lewisboro borders I feel the need to explain a New York hamlet.  Simply put, a hamlet is a small village within a larger community.  The town will not have been incorporated as a village.  The hamlet is land administered by the town, in this case, Lewisboro.

We used Lewisboro demographics for this content.  Total land mass is approximately 29 square miles with a population of 12,471 as of 2010 census.  There is about 48 inches of snow/rain in South Salem each year. Brrrrrr!

* The town recently adopted a ban on plastic and styrofoam.
*  School - Katonah-Lewisboro School District
* There are 7 lakes in the area serving South Salem. Lake Waccabuc is the largest.
* Wolf Conservatory Center

Recent homeowners have said "South Salem is a very sleepy town with a great school district, lot sizes are huge and it has a close proximity to Ridgefield and New Canaan in Connecticut.
Current housing data shows homes of 4 bedroom/3 Baths and 3,036 square feet is roughly $399,900.
