Central Park South contains four famous upscale hotels: the Plaza Hotel, the Ritz-Carlton, the Park Lane, and JW Marriott Essex House. While Central Park South is bi-directional, the section of 59th Street between Ninth and Eleventh Avenue/West End Avenue is one-way westbound, and the section between Fifth Avenue and Second Avenue is one-way eastbound.

Central Park itself is a visual masterpiece created by landscape designer Frederick Law Olmsted and architect Calvert Vaux. It was established in 1857 on 778 acres (315 ha) of city-owned land. It has gone through major developments and restoration over time to carry on its initial purpose as an open-air oasis for a metropolitan city.
